Graffiti Murals in Mission District ‣ San Francisco, Cali
MISSION DISTRICT ‣ SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA│ Since the early 1970s, Mission District, has over 500 murals. One of the highest numbers of street art in any neighbourhood in the world. No wonder it’s the hottest spot to check out if you are in San Francisco.
There is a lot to take in; I would recommend dedicating at least a few hours to explore. I wish I had more time when I took these photos. I was also in a rush to catch the Cal train to meet friends & family for dinner. 🥲
There are murals just in every area, nooks and corners. From the alleyway to the main streets, find them in parking lots to full building views, on the street itself to garage doors.
BALMY ALLEY
Balmy Alley is the first place I’ve checked out, and apparently, it’s forever changing. First started in 1972 by a resident in childcare, then a year later, an all-female artist collective Mujeres Muralistas was founded, and then in the mid-1980s, the second wave of new murals popped up. The art here represents womanhood, beauty, topics like police harassment, and people of cultures.
CLARION ALLEY
Filled with many important messages through art, Clarion Alley is one of the best places for street art! This alley is probably one of the biggest highlights as it represents the struggles and issues locals have faced over the years.
